If you’re looking for a great bonsai tree which can survive the winter in the warmer areas of Canada, then you may want one of the Juniper Procumbens. This bonsai, which won’t do well in the colder areas, will need some protection from the snow and the cold, but it still does pretty well in the southern areas of Canada.

This outdoor bonsai is quite forgiving, so while it does need protection from the cold, it’s also a favorite of many bonsai lovers and of those who have just started growing bonsai. The Juniper Procumbens likes water and needs to be kept moist, but it can handle a bit of dryness as long as you don’t make it a habit of letting it go without water. These Juniper bonsai are forgiving, but constant neglect will kill them.

There are a couple of ways to tell if your bonsai is properly watered. Since water makes up about a fourth of the overall weight, you can often tell how much water is in your bonsai’s pot by simply picking it up. Another technique is to use a chopstick or other straight stick. Simply poke it down into the pot and then pull it out. If it’s dry, then you’ve got to water your bonsai.
